It’s that time of the year when the ground is covered with frost with a chilling feel in the air. Well, you definitely know the season we’re talking about – winter. While there are dozens, if not hundreds of things on your mind this season, the chances of gardening being close to the top is very slim.
This is understandable because the chilling air and frosty ground are not gardening-friendly at all. But what if we tell you that you can have a stunning garden year-round with little to no maintenance, even in winter? Of course, we’re talking about Astro Turf!
The demand for artificial grass is growing, thanks to its minimal maintenance requirement and longevity. The best part is that you can install your artificial lawn in winter. Thinking this is not possible? Well, that’s why we’re here for you. Our professional installers work year-round, so whenever you want your installation done, we’re always at your service, irrespective of the season.
First, when installing artificial grass, you may not have access to your garden for a couple of days. During winter, you’ll spend more time indoors and not in the garden, making this season a perfect time to install your fake grass. With this, you can have your garden ready for summer when the weather is warm and perfect for spending more time outside.
This doesn’t mean you can’t use your garden in winter. As a matter of fact, you enjoy artificial grass more than traditional grass in winter. For one, you don’t have to worry about paw prints and mud being brought into your house.
No doubt, there are several benefits you enjoy when you opt for fake grass. So, are you planning to install artificial grass in your lawn or garden? In this post, we’ll share six tips to make your fake grass installation project successful.
Fake grass comes packaged in rolls to make handling, shipping, and storage easy for everyone. Therefore, the first thing you should do after receiving your artificial grass is to take the roll to where you plan to install it and unroll it. This process will straighten it out and remove any ripples and wrinkles on it. This makes the installation process easier and faster.
Although fake grass comes with latex backing, which means it will be flat on almost any surface while holding its shape, it’s still recommended that you unroll it and leave it for a while to straighten out properly before installing.
If you’re installing the grass in winter, leave it unrolled for 48 hours before installing it to get the best result. For summer, 24 hours is enough to do the trick. It’s a good idea to warm up the latex back briefly with a heat gun or heater to make the installation easier and prevent any serious stretching of the fake grass.
Winter is often characterized by heavy waterlogging and this affects gardens a lot. Don’t do a shoddy job by just installing the fake lawn on your existing garden. This can seriously mess up your investment. Instead, dig out the old garden and install a sub-base and laying-course before you lay the fake grass.
It’s important to know that how well you prepare the ground before the installation will determine how beautiful the finishing will look. So, preparing the ground is an important stage of the process.
If you’re installing the Astroturf in winter, you’re likely working in a temperature below 5 degrees. Therefore, the best adhesive to use is the Wet-Fix. This adhesive has a rapid set accelerator that quickens the curing process.
Even if the temperature is close to freezing point, Wet-Fix will still do a great job. In addition to using it to secure the joins, you can also use it to secure the perimeter of the grass to any edge you have.
If you’re installing a sand infill, it’s important that the fake grass is totally dry. The reason for this is simple. The silica sand is fine sand and can easily and quickly absorb moisture. This will make it clump together, and when this happens, the sand won’t get to the bottom of the pile, even if you use a power brush.
Also, ensure that the bags of sand are kept in a dry place before installation. If the bags have holes in them, it’s easy for moisture to get in and affect the sand.
To secure a join, you need to apply the adhesive to the artificial grass joining tape, and then take the two pieces of fake grass and join them together with the tape. Now, when the tape is wet or damp, the adhesive can become weak, which ultimately leads to weak joins.
Although we recommend using Wet-Fix adhesive even in winter because of its bonding strength, it’s best to keep the joining tape dry so you can get a strong bond and perfect finish.
Winter is a cold and damp season, which means things don’t get dry easily. Therefore, be prepared to wait a bit longer for your artificial grass to cure and be ready to use. This means you have to keep your pets and kids away from the grass for at least 24 hours.
If the temperature is lower than 10 degrees, it’s best to wait for at least 48 hours before using the garden or lawn after installation.
