How To Install Artificial Grass

Turning your outdoor space into a haven with a lush, green lawn is easier than you think. In this step-by-step guide to laying artificial grass, we’ll walk you through the process to ensure a seamless and professional finish.

Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a first-time, our simple instructions will help you achieve a stunning, low-maintenance lawn that looks perfect all year round. So, what’s the first step in laying your artificial lawn grass turf?

Prepare Your Space for Artificial Grass

The first step to laying Astro turf is accurately measuring the space you want to cover. This will help you calculate how much grass you need to buy. To visualize the area properly, consider using a spray can to outline the desired grass dimensions. This will give you a clear picture of where the grass will be placed.

Important Note: Our artificial grass comes in standard widths of 2 meters, 4 meters, and 5 meters. To reduce waste and ensure color consistency, we recommend designing your area within these measurements.

If you’re installing borders, make sure they are slightly smaller than the grass width to accommodate manufacturing variations. For instance, if you’re ordering 4-meter-wide grass, set your borders at a maximum of 3.95 meters.

Also, note that joining multiple grass pieces will result in slight width loss because of the trimming. For instance, combining a 4-meter and 2-meter piece won’t create a perfect 6-meter width. Expect a final width closer to 5.9 meters after trimming for a seamless joining.

Place Your Artificial Grass Order

With your measurements done, it’s time to order your artificial grass. We offer a range of high-quality options in 2 and 4-meter widths, with lengths up to 25 meters. You can conveniently place your order online or speak directly with our team to discuss your project in detail.

Our experts can assist with product selection, quantity, and any additional materials you may need. We can also give you some free grass samples to give you an idea of what to expect with your delivery.

To ensure a seamless installation, consider purchasing the following essential tools alongside your budget artificial grass:

  • Fixing nails to secure the grass in place
  • Artificial grass underlay for a level base and improved drainage
  • Sharp utility knife for perfect cutting.
  • Artificial lawn grass turf adhesive to securely bond seams
  • Adhesive comb for even adhesive application
  • Joining tape to reinforce the seams.

With these tools on hand, you can seamlessly install your Astro turf and achieve professional results.

Prepare the Ground for Your Artificial Grass

The first step to installing your artificial grass is to prepare the ground. This involves removing the existing grass and soil to create a level base.

For clay soil, which has poor drainage, you will need to dig deeper and add a layer of hardcore to improve water flow. To determine the depth, consider the height of your chosen artificial synthetic grass turf and any additional materials you’ll be using, such as a weed membrane or base layer.

As a general guideline, dig down at least 100-150mm below your desired grass height. For example, if you are using a 40mm pile height artificial grass on clay soil, you might dig down 150mm. This allows for 100mm of hardcore, 25mm of granite dust, and 25mm recess. This will leave a 15mm pile height visible above your edging.

Compacting the Base

To create a stable foundation for your artificial lawn grass turf, it’s essential to compact the hardcore. This process removes air pockets and ensures even ground distribution and prevents future settling. Use a vibrating place, available for rental at most equipment hire centers, to thoroughly compact the hardcore.

Laying the Weed Barrier

To effectively prevent weeds from sprouting through your artificial grass, consider installing a geo-textile weed barrier. This material acts as a protective layer between the ground and the grass.

While some landscapers prefer to apply it after the base layer, it can also be added as a final step before laying the grass. Making the right choice is crucial and depends on the specific requirements and preferences of your project.

Adding the Sub-Base

To create a smooth and level surface for your artificial turf, apply a sub-base layer. A common choice is a 6mm stone aggregate, similar to what’s used for paving bricks. Aim for a thickness of 75mm to 100mm. This is also an ideal time to install timber edging if you want. Ensure the edging is below the final grass level to prevent waterlogging and visibility.

Spreading and Compacting the Sub-Base

For the best results, use a vibrating plate to evenly distribute and compact the sub-base material. If you don’t have access to a vibrating plate, a garden spade can be used, but be cautious to avoid creating uneven areas.

Laying the Base Material

Apply a 15-25mm layer of granite dust as the base material. This provides a firm foundation and improves drainage. Use the vibrating plate to compact and level the granite dust. While sharp sand can also be used, granite dust is becoming the preferred choice.

Try to maintain a slight slope in the base for proper water drainage. If you haven’t already installed the weed barrier, do it at this point.

Laying the Astro Turf

Carefully lay the artificial grass on top of the prepared base, avoiding dragging it across the surface. Allow the grass to settle for 2-3 hours to prevent wrinkles or creases. Thoroughly inspect the grass for any defects and contact us immediately if you find any issues.

We usually give our clients grass samples to check before delivering their orders so they can check for any issues.

Cutting and Trimming

Using a sharp knife, cut the artificial turf around your garden’s perimeter to ensure a tight fit. If joining multiple pieces, do this before securing the grass in place. Make sure to leave a small 1-2mm gap between the grass pieces to allow for potential expansion due to heat.

Joining the Seams

Secure the seams between the pieces using high-quality outdoor seaming tape and glue. We recommend buying these materials from us when placing your order.

Adding Infill (Optional)

While not required for all products, some customers prefer to add sand infill for areas with high traffic. You can also use Envirofill. Evenly distribute the infill and avoid overfilling. Note that sand infill may settle over time, which may require additional application. It’s best to apply infill on a dry day.

Finishing Touches: Add Edging

You can enhance the look of your artificial grass by installing natural stone, paving, or log roll edgings. If you prefer a simple approach, secure the grass with landscaping nails placed at about every 40mm around the perimeter.

Installing Artificial Grass on Concrete or Permanent Base

Beautifying a concrete or existing surface into a lush green space is easier than you think. In this section, we’ll walk you through the steps of installing budget artificial grass on hard surfaces.

While it’s a simpler process than laying grass on soil, you must carefully prepare for it to achieve a successful result. Here are the steps to installing synthetic turf on concrete or permanent base:

Assess Your Area: Determine the required amount of artificial lawn, considering our available widths of 2 meters and 4 meters, with some 5-meter options. Please note that 4-meter and 5-meter products have different manufacturing processes and cannot be color-matched. Check out our range of colored artificial lawns for a unique look.

Prepare the Surface: Ensure the surface is clean, smooth, and free from imperfections. Use a self-leveling compound or our Drainbase product to create a perfect base. A shockpad underlay can also help with uneven surfaces and provide additional cushioning.

Lay the Grass: Place the synthetic grass on the prepared areas, and allow for a 50mm overlap for trimming. Let it settle for about two to three hours to prevent wrinkles.

Cut and Trim: use a sharp Stanley knife to cut the grass carefully around the edges to ensure a tight fit.

Join the Seams: Apply high-quality outdoor seaming tape and glue to secure joins. We recommend buying these materials from us for best results.

Secure the Grass: Use our cartridge adhesive around the grass perimeter to fix it in place. For wooden surfaces like decking, combine adhesive with carpet tacks.

How to Install Temporary Artificial Grass

For small, temporary spaces like patios or balconies, there are different easy ways to install artificial grass. Here are three simple methods:

Weight Method: Lay out the synthetic lawn and cut it to size. Ensure it is flat. Using heavy objects like plant pots, garden ornaments, or furniture, secure it in place perfectly.

Adhesive Tape Method: Lay and cut the grass as before, but use double-sided adhesive tape to secure it to the surface. Consider the wind factor for outdoor installations and take precautions where necessary.

Staple Method: If the surface allows for stapling, like medium-density fiberboard or plywood, use a staple gun to secure the grass. This method is suitable for indoor use or sheltered outdoor areas too.

If you only need a small amount of artificial grass for a temporary project, consider our artificial grass offcuts for potential cost savings. We also offer free grass samples to help you make an informed decision.
