Important Note: Our artificial grass comes in standard widths of 2 meters, 4 meters, and 5 meters. To reduce waste and ensure color consistency, we recommend designing your area within these measurements.

If you’re installing borders, make sure they are slightly smaller than the grass width to accommodate manufacturing variations. For instance, if you’re ordering 4-meter-wide grass, set your borders at a maximum of 3.95 meters. 

Also, note that joining multiple grass pieces will result in slight width loss because of the trimming. For instance, combining a 4-meter and 2-meter piece won’t create a perfect 6-meter width. Expect a final width closer to 5.9 meters after trimming for a seamless joining.

As a general guideline, dig down at least 100-150mm below your desired grass height. For example, if you are using a 40mm pile height artificial grass on clay soil, you might dig down 150mm. This allows for 100mm of hardcore, 25mm of granite dust, and 25mm recess. This will leave a 15mm pile height visible above your edging.

Compacting the Base

To create a stable foundation for your artificial lawn grass turf, it’s essential to compact the hardcore. This process removes air pockets and ensures even ground distribution and prevents future settling. Use a vibrating place, available for rental at most equipment hire centers, to thoroughly compact the hardcore.

Laying the Weed Barrier

To effectively prevent weeds from sprouting through your artificial grass, consider installing a geo-textile weed barrier. This material acts as a protective layer between the ground and the grass.

While some landscapers prefer to apply it after the base layer, it can also be added as a final step before laying the grass. Making the right choice is crucial and depends on the specific requirements and preferences of your project.

Adding the Sub-Base

To create a smooth and level surface for your artificial turf, apply a sub-base layer. A common choice is a 6mm stone aggregate, similar to what’s used for paving bricks. Spreading and Compacting the Sub-Base

For the best results, use a vibrating plate to evenly distribute and compact the sub-base material. If you don’t have access to a vibrating plate, a garden spade can be used, but be cautious to avoid creating uneven areas.

Laying the Base Material

Apply a 15-25mm layer of granite dust as the base material. This provides a firm foundation and improves drainage. Use the vibrating plate to compact and level the granite dust. While sharp sand can also be used, granite dust is becoming the preferred choice. 

Try to maintain a slight slope in the base for proper water drainage. If you haven’t already installed the weed barrier, do it at this point.

Laying the Astro Turf

Carefully lay the artificial grass on top of the prepared base, avoiding dragging it across the surface. Allow the grass to settle for 2-3 hours to prevent wrinkles or creases. Thoroughly inspect the grass for any defects and contact us immediately if you find any issues.

Cutting and Trimming

Using a sharp knife, cut the artificial turf around your garden’s perimeter to ensure a tight fit. If joining multiple pieces, do this before securing the grass in place. Make sure to leave a small 1-2mm gap between the grass pieces to allow for potential expansion due to heat.

Joining the Seams

Secure the seams between the pieces using high-quality outdoor seaming tape and glue. We recommend buying these materials from us when placing your order.

Adding Infill (Optional)

While not required for all products, some customers prefer to add sand infill for areas with high traffic. You can also use Envirofill. Evenly distribute the infill and avoid overfilling. Note that sand infill may settle over time, which may require additional application. It’s best to apply infill on a dry day.

Finishing Touches: Add Edging

You can enhance the look of your artificial grass by installing natural stone, paving, or log roll edgings. If you prefer a simple approach, secure the grass with landscaping nails placed at about every 40mm around the perimeter.
